The wine region of La Rioja is in the north of Spain, between the two banks of the river Ebro near regions of Álava and Navarre, La Rioja wine region is located on 43,885 hectares of vineyards. The wine production sectors are divided into three main sub, La Rioja Alta, extending approximately 26,786 hectares, known for mid-grade wines with full body and high acidity, suitable for aging in barrels. La Rioja Alavesa, 12,934 hectares, known for its red wines suitable for more immediate consumption – especially if carbonic maceration is used in winemaking - or for aging in barrels. The third sub-area is La Rioja Baja, which extends 23,873 hectares, is noted for the production of red and rosé wines with higher alcohol, deeper colours and fruitier.
